Performance by ProEnglish Theatre of Ukraine. In English
The monoplay
This is a story of one night in Rome that changed the course of history. The performance is an attempt to artistically reflect on the topic of violence by promoting the statement of life and power beauty.
The show is a multi-disciplinary and multicultural project based on The Rape of Lucrecia by William Shakespeare, Ukrainian folk songs, Taras Shevchenko, Lesia Ukrainka and Christina Bila poetry, Ovid’s testimonies and the documented stories of women from the Kyiv region, East and South of Ukraine. It combines physical theatre with Shakespearean verse, an approach to authentic Ukrainian drama based on the Les Kurbas method.
Work continues on the play, which began in May 2022 in collaboration with the Shakespeare Festival in Craiova thanks to the ideas and support of Vlad Dragulescu (artistic director of the National Theatre of Craiova) and Joanna Snezhko (head of the European network of Shakespeare festivals).
It was designed and executed during the Shakespeare Festival in Craiova, Romania, in May-June 2022, the Gdansk Shakespeare Festival, Poland, in July 2022, and at Pro.Act Fest in Kyiv, Ukraine, in August 2022.
